At the bottom of the downpipe that carries water away from your gutters and eventually into the main drain there is normally to be found what is known as a 'Gulley'. Basically this is an S bend type section of underground pipe which acts very much like how the pipe directly behind your toilet works and it usually has some sort of metal or plastic grate cover over the top of it at ground level to stop debris entering into the gulley from the floor.

Where the grate stops debris entering the gulley from the floor unfortunately nothing usually stops the debris from within the gutters from entering it via the down pipe and provided that the down pipe doesn't become blocked first, as does happen quite regularly, the gulley is constantly bombarded with debris from inside the gutters. Eventually this can lead to a blockage in the gulley or worse still a blockage in the drain running from the gulley to the manhole.

If you see water spilling out of the gulley it means that either it is blocked or the drain further along is blocked, either way specialist rodding equipment etc will be required to shift the blockage. Again as with gutter cleaning, gulley/ drain clearing is a very dirty job and also potentially a very hazardous one from a health stand point, due to the fact that you will likely come into contact at some point with some form of human waste. Please be aware of this if you are going to attempt to clear this sort of blockage yourself and please do kit yourself out with the correct personal protective products before starting the work.
